【March 21st Spring Equinox Day in Japan】
Do you know that there is public holiday in March called “shunbun-no-hi” which in English “Spring Equinox Day”. This day marks the start of spring and the end of winter.
On the Spring Equinox day, day and night have the same length.The Spring Equinox day varies each year, but it is usually on the 20th of March or the 21st of March and as you know that this year on that day will be 21st of March.
The seven days including spring equinox day and the 3 days before and after are called O-higan or Spring equinox week. I guess many Japanese have no idea what that is. In Buddhism, ” O-higan ” means the other world or paradise It is believed that the spirits of ancestors return to this world on these days, so people visit their family graves to pay respect to their ancestors.
On this day we eat traditional sweets Botamochi or rice cake dumplings covered with azuki bean jam or Kinako.

3月には「春分の日」英語で、「Spring Equinox Day」という祝日があることをご存知ですか。 この日は春の始まりと、冬の終わりを意味します。
春分の日は昼と夜の長さがほぼ同じになると言われています。
年によって変動しますが、たいてい3月20日または、3月21日のどちらかで、今年2023年は3/21（火）です。
春分の日の日を含む、前後1週間を”お彼岸”と呼びます。日本人の方で知らない方も多いのではないでしょうか。”彼岸”は仏教で「あの世」とか「極楽」を意味するようです。この日に先祖の霊がこの世に戻ってくると信じられているため、人々は先祖を敬うために家族の墓を訪れます。
この日は伝統的な和菓子”ぼた餅”を食べるのが主流です。スーパーにも売っているので、食べてみてくださいね♪
