Hydrangea is a common flower in Japan in June. This time, I will explain a little about hydrangea!
Hydrangeas look great in the rainy season. Did you know that the petals of a hydrangea actually look like sepals, and that the flower is in the center? The part that looks like the petals of that decorative flower is actually “calyx” and so many people misunderstand!
Also, if the pH of the soil is acidic, the hydrangea will turn blue, if it is alkaline, it will turn red, and if it is neutral, it will turn purple. However, many selective breeding do not change color.
Japan is a volcanic area with a lot of rain and weakly acidic soil, so blues and purples are the mainstream, but reds are the mainstream in Europe, where there is a lot of alkaline soil. The beautiful bluish-purple hydrangeas can only be found in Japan.
The floriography of hydrangea is “capricious”, “impermanence” and “cheating”. Both are derived from the fact that the color of hydrangea changes. In the West, it is said to be the flower language of “heartlessness”, “boastfulness” and “You are cold”.

【6月の花 紫陽花】
みなさん、あじさいのお花は知っていますか？
6月になると日本でよく見られる花ですが、いろんな色のあじさいがあって楽しいですよね。今回は、あじさいについて少し説明します！
梅雨にはあじさいがよく似合いますよね、しっとりと濡れた姿も美しく、梅雨ならではの風情を感じますね。実は、あじさいの花びらに見えるのはガクで、中心部にあるのが花だということは知っていますか？あの装飾花の花びらに見える部分は、実は「がく」です。つまり、本当の花ではありません。不思議ですよね！
あじさいは、土壌のph（水素イオン濃度指数）が酸性だと青系に、アルカリ性だと赤系に、中間だと紫系になります。しかし、品種改良されたものは色が変わらないものが多いです。
日本は火山地帯で雨も多く弱酸性の土壌が多いため、青系や紫系が主流ですが、欧州ではアルカリ性の土壌が多いため、赤系が主流となっています。美しい青紫のあじさいは、日本だからこそなんですね。
あじさいの花言葉は、「移り気」「無常」「浮気」です。いずれも紫陽花の色が変化することに由来しています。また、西洋では、「heartlessness（冷酷）」「boastfulness（高慢）」「You are cold（あなたは冷たい人）」という花言葉になるそうです。
しかし、あじさいの色によって異なります！！！
