【Train Manners in Japan】
Some foreigners getting trains in Japan may wonder, “What kind of manners are there?” I would like to introduce some of them for today.
○ Do not talk on the phone on the train
In Japan, it’s good manners to refrain from talking on the phone and stay quiet when you get on the train. In trains in Japan, there are also posters that remind people to refrain from talking on the phone and put their phones on silent mode. In some countries overseas, people routinely talk on the phone or speak loudly on the train. Therefore, foreigners riding a Japanese train for the first time will wonder at the quiet atmosphere inside the train.
○ Wait in line before boarding the train
Japanese people line up before getting on the train, and when the train arrives, they give priority to people getting off and get on in the order of the line. In countries other than Japan, there is almost no custom of lining up for boarding. Even foreigners from countries where people line up to get on board seem to find it rare to line up neatly like in Japan.
○ Do not put your luggage on the seat
When getting the train, do not leave your luggage on the seat. It is because other passengers can’t sit because of putting luggage. It is good manners to put your luggage on your lap or at your feet. If you have large luggage that might get in the way of other passengers, put it on the shelf above the seat.

日本の電車に乗る外国人のなかには、「どのようなマナーがあるの？」「海外との違いを知りたい」と思う人もいるでしょう。いくつかご紹介いたします。
○電車内で電話をしない
日本では、電車に乗ったら電話を控えて静かに過ごすのがマナーです。日本の電車内には、通話を控えて携帯電話をマナーモードにするように注意喚起するポスターも貼られています。海外では、日常的に電車内で電話したり大声で会話したりする国もあります。そのため、初めて日本の電車に乗る外国人は、電車内の静かな雰囲気を不思議に思うでしょう。
○電車に乗る前に整列して待つ
日本人は電車に乗る前に整列し、電車が来たら降りる人を優先して列の順番通りに乗車します。日本以外の国では、「整列乗車」の習慣はほとんどありません。整列乗車を行う国の外国人であっても、日本のように綺麗に整列するのは珍しいと感じるようです。
○荷物を座席に置かない
電車に乗る際は、荷物を座席に置かないようにしましょう。荷物を置いたせいで、ほかの乗客が座れなくなるからです。
荷物は膝の上や足元に置くのがマナーです。なお、ほかの人の邪魔になりそうな大きな荷物は、座席の上にある棚に乗せましょう。
