【Morocco earthquake: Over 2,000 dead so far; rescue operations continue】
State media have reported that more than 2,000 people have been killed in the strong earthquake that struck Morocco in North Africa on the 8th. At the site, rescue efforts continue for people stranded in collapsed buildings.
A magnitude 6.8 earthquake occurred late on the 8th local time in Haouz province, approximately 70 km southwest of Marrakech in central Morocco. Moroccan state media says 2,122 people have been killed and 2,421 injured.
There have been nine earthquakes of magnitude 5 or higher in the area around Morocco since 1900, but this was the first to exceed magnitude 6, making it the largest in more than 120 years.
The disaster-affected areas of Morocco are now in their third day on the 10th, finding it difficult to secure food, water, and shelter.
Many of the areas that suffered the most damage, including the epicenter, are located in mountainous areas, making it difficult to reach them, making rescue efforts difficult.

モロッコ中部のマラケシュの南西およそ70キロにあるハウズ州で、現地時間の8日深夜、マグニチュード6.8の地震がありました。モロッコの国営メディアはこれまでに2122人が死亡し、2421人がけがをしたと伝えています。
モロッコ周辺では1900年以降、M5以上の地震が9回起きているが、M6を超えたのは初めてで、過去120年余りで最大規模となった。
３日目を迎えた１０日のモロッコの被災地域では、食料や水、避難場所をなかなか確保できない状況に置かれている。
震源地を含めて被害が大きかった場所の多くが山間部に位置し、たどり着くのに苦労するため救助活動も難航中。
